About 71% of surface is water, in which 96.5% of it are Oceans- with 2.0% fresh water. The oceans extend to depths of more than 10,000 meters. Oceans comprise nine-tenths of the planet water resources and are home to over 97 percent of all life on earth – at the same time our knowledge of marine biodiversity is far less advanced compared to that of terrestrial biodiversity (Life on Land).  The oceans also have an essential role in the functioning of our planet and in fact they affect the health and survival of all life, they power our climate and are an essential part of the biosphere (the layer of the planet Earth where life exists). Yet, human activity has significantly and negatively impacted the Marine Environment and Marine Biodiversity.
